The Oscars come to Benenden as John Clarke is honoured

Thirty two years of devoted service to amateur dramatics were recognised by the Benenden Players recently when they awarded John Clarke a life time achievement award. Benenden Players started 32 years ago and have produced a pantomime or musical every year since. Mr Clarke has served in various positions in the production crew including lighting, sound and most recently stage manager as well as being a member of the management committee.

John Clarke is well known in Benenden having a long history of public service as a parish councillor and also the chairman of the village hall management committee; on which he has served since it was built in 1976.

Writer and Director of the latest Benenden Players Production 'Sleeping Beauty: The Panto', Beverley Beveridge, said: "People such as John are the backbone of these village productions; always there when needed as well as putting in many hours behind the scenes to make sure the production goes smoothly".

As well as receiving his very own 'Oscar' Mr Clarke was also presented with a meal for two at the Black Pig in Hawkhurst.
"I love working with everyone who gets involved on and off stage," said Mr Clarke. "This award was a total surprise and means a great deal to me".

The Benenden Players are a group of local volunteers of all ages who get involved on stage and behind the scenes to produce one major annual show, as well as several special events throughout the year.
